The 280' long Glendale History Walk begins and ends with images of plants and animals from the surrounding desert to signify that the town was carved out of the desert and to the desert it is returning as it employs sustainable building practices and xeriscaping. The history of Glendale is told starting with precolonial times through the present day, using realistically-rendered symbols of the classic Roman trompe l’oeil technique of the “unswept floor.” The long, linear site was perfect to create a storyboard providing an unfolding narrative as walkers explore along its length. An educational brochure was created by the city to explain the meaning of each medallion in detail.
